PHRASES IN THE GITA - 23
Atha Kena Prayuktoyam Paapam Charati (Anicchaannapi) ..( Chapter 3 .. Shloka 36)
Meaning : Why is Man forced into Paapa (Sin), even if he does not want it ?
That is a good question by Arjuna. Gita is full of such questions by Arjuna and great answers by Shri Krishna. Question provokes thought. Sharp question provokes bright answers. Question must be sincere and born out of quest to know. Arrogance and impulse to stump the teacher should never accompany a Question.
This is most frequently asked question by listeners of Gita discourse. "Why should the God create sinners at all?" "Why should He not have created only 'the good'?" These questioners assume themselves to be Good and the question is born out of their frustrating experience with the 'Bad'. But, this question by Arjuna is a bit different. He does not try to exempt self. In fact, he feels he himself is on to worst sin by fighting this War and by killing men in enemy army.
Why is man forced into Sin? No one wants to commit sin. Yet, none keeps out of sin. What is it that incites him in to sin? That is the question of Arjuna. What does Shri Krishna say in reply? Let us know in the next episode.
