PHRASES IN THE GITA - 35

कर्मण्यभिप्रवृत्तोsपि  ... (अध्याय ४  - श्लोक २०)
கரமண்யபி ப்ரவ்ருத்தோsபி ... (அத்யாயம்  4 - ஶ்லோகம்  20)
Karmanyabhi Pravrutto(a)pi ... (Chapter 4 - Shloka 20)

Meaning :  Though one is deeply engrossed in hectic activity ,....

This is a beautiful phrase and the experience suggested by the phrase is also a beautiful experience.  It seems to be an incomplete phrase. "Though one is deeply engrossed in activity, multifarious activities ..."  Yes.  It is incomplete.  But, this phrase itself  suggests the other half too, the that will complete it .  "He / she is not involved in activity."  "He / she stays detached from the very same activities."

Engrossment is total.  Involvement is complete.  Shareera, Manas and Buddhi, every bit of one's personality is involved in the activity. and involved wholly.  There is no energy left in Shareera;  there is no space left in the Buddhi;  there is no desire or attachment left in Manas for any other activity.  If there is any maneuvering in the body, it is only for a better performance of the activity.  If there is any thought being stirred in the Manas, it is only about the activity.  Even rest and sleep are meant only to facilitate a better conduct of the activity.

And detachment ???  Detachment is also total.  The body gets exhausted and involuntarily dozes off.  It catches sleep the moment it gets a chance.  It is exhausted no doubt, but he never registers  the exhaustion in the body.

The mind never gets bored, disillusioned, dis-enthused or stressed up.  Attachment with the activity and the fruits thereof result in one or all of these.  He just involves and continues with the activity.  Detachment is instant.  He just passes on the activity to another person and enjoys watching him do the same, with or without any need for his guidance or consultancy.

Among the persons I have related with, my mother is closest to this status. She was involved, involved every moment, involved in the activity on hand, involved totally.  I have never seen her complaining.  I have never seen her sitting with a sagged face.  I have never seen her evading an activity.  I have ever seen her showing extra like or dislike for any activity.  Ever ready to take-up an activity, get engrossed in it and quit the same and get away in a split second.

I got a taste of such a state during the days I worked whole-time in RSS, during the two and a half years period wife Akhila was bedridden, and in the last couple of months when I am involved in Shri Shankara Mutt activities. I am not sure if such an experience could be enjoyed through conscious and systematic effort.  But, I am sure those few are fortunate and blessed ones who experience this state even for a day.

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
