PHRASES IN THE GITA - 48
नव द्वारे पुरे देही ... (अध्याय ५ - श्लोक १३)
நவ த்வாரே புரே தேஹீ ... (அத்யாயம் 5 - ஶ்லோகம் 13)
Nawadwaare Pure Dehee ... (Chapter 5 - Shlokam 13)
Meaning : Dehee residing in a City with nine gates ...
This is another great analogy in Hindu scriptures . The city of Nine Gates is our Physical body . It has nine holes , which are called here Gates ..These are gates opening to the outer world . These are the gates through which the Self goes out into the world , indulges in interaction between the Self identified with a sense and the objects of the world . The physical body is also called Deha .
The Self is called Dehee , and is described as a Resident of Deha, the City with Nine Gates . This terminology is effective in suggesting that the Dehee or Self is different from the Deha or the physical body . It is a resident . It stays in the body and is different from the body . The Self has a natural tendency to get identified with the Body . One who is bound to the Residence gets pained at deformities in the residence, a mere physical structure . This applies to a structure of cement and bricks too . It is natural for a physical structure to deform, decay and collapse . One who learns to realize this separation between the Resident and the residence retains his calm on observing deformities in the residence . He may strive to repair the damage in physical structure , he may put in efforts to maintain the structure in good shape . But , these efforts are without ignorant Identification with the structure , without the feel that "this is Me" ..
