PHRASES IN THE GITA - 57

सम बुद्धिर्विशिष्यते  ...  (अध्याय ६ - श्लोक ९ )
ஸம புத்திர் விஶிஷ்யதே  ...  (அத்யாயம் 6 - ஶ்லோகம் 9)
Sama Buddhir Vishishyate  ...  (Chapter 6 - Shloka 9)

Meaning :  Equipoise is unique ...

Equipoise , Balance , Equilibrium of mind ... This is one idea emphasized again and again by Shri Krishna in the Gita .

Human mind loses its poise on account of three factors ... men , material and experiences .

Experiences ..  Human life is but collection of experiences .  This begins with birth and stops only after the last breathe is let out .  Experiences are unavoidable .  It is great if experiences are gained and used as steps to improve self.  But , this does not happen that way .  Our mind classifies experiences as favourable , unfavourable , sweet , bitter , pleasant , unpleasant etc . and aspires to selectively gain favourable and pleasant ones and resists unfavourable ones .  This is an impossible aspiration and hence the mind loses its equilibrium .

Materials ...  Similarly , the mind categorizes materials as valuable , worthless , greater , lowly , etc . and passionately seeks to get the valuable one and loses balance in the process .  Peace in mind is lost disturbing  equipoise due to exertion beyond one's capacity , to gain the materials regarded valuable . Peace and equilibrium are also lost when the materials regarded as precious are either lost or damaged .  Jealousy born on seeing 'better' materials possessed by others is also a cause for disturbance in poise .

Men ...  Comparison with others is a factor which disturbs balance within .  Our mind tends to assign marks to men around us , classify and differentiate them , resulting in mind losing its calm poise .  Assuming that "I deserve this ..(Respect , honour , Welcome , felicitation , gift , award , money , position , etc )" our mind evaluates others on the basis of what we receive from them  and in the process loses equilibrium .

Shree Krishna suggests that , "Experiences be accepted as those are without tagging adjectives to those .  Materials , dust or stones or gold be viewed equally .  Men need not be classified as friend , adversary , saint , sinner , detached , affectionate , neutral , etc . and viewed with a balanced vision . Thus balance within may be retained .

Mind with equipoise is unique .

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
