महात्मा सुदुर्लभः  ।  (अध्याय ७ - श्लोक १९)
மஹாத்மா ஸுதுர்லபஹ  ...  (அத்யாயம் 7 - ஶ்லோகம் 19)

How many coal mines are there on earth ?  How much coal lies accumulated in these mines ?  What are the similar numbers for diamond ?  Diamond is transformed version of coal .  Diamonds are rare .  Though coal is abundant , though diamond is ennobled version of coal , yet diamonds are rare .  Not all pieces of coal transform into diamonds .  A piece of coal has to undergo rigorous penance to be transformed into a diamond .

It is believed that a water drop in an oyster shell transforms itself into a pearl .  Oysters are in huge numbers in the ocean .  Oyster shells are also in a huge number .  Oyster shells carrying a drop of water are also in huge numbers .  But , pearls are rare .  Not every drop of water transform itself into a pearl .  To be transformed into a pearl , the drop of water has to undergo a rigorous penance .

A Mahatmaa is an ennobled version of human .  A human is transformed into a Mahatmaa as the result of rigorous penance .  This may continue for a few births .  Birth of a desire is first step .  Systematic and consistent exercise , the next .  Conscious efforts gradually build up a Swabhava or inherent nature .  Mahatmaa is the manifestation of Swabhava , the result of long term efforts , Swabhava that remains unaffected in the face of glamorous diversions and hurdles .

Can every human be transformed into a Mahatmaa ?  May be in Sat Yug , the first in four Yuga .  The general environment in society , living examples of Mahatmaas rather than glorious examples in books are crucial in inspiring efforts towards making of a Mahatmaa .  The society around us is more glamorous , with stronger allurements .  The aspirations and efforts are more worldly , more sensual , more towards pleasures and comforts .  The importance and concern shown for the exterior is much more than the inner world .  The Sannyaasis associated with prominent Missions like Shri Ramakrishna Mission , the Maata Amritaanand Mission , complain that not a single student among lakhs who study in thousands of Mission run schools and colleges aspires to become even a Sannyaasi .  A Mahatma may be a almost impossible demand .  The exterior may not inspire .

Shri Krishna is issuing a statement , a plain statement , a statement of Truth .  It is not an expression of anguish or sigh .  It is a factual statement .  Mahatmaa is rare , very rare .

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
