PHRASES IN THE GITA - 90
पुनरावर्तिनः ... (अध्याय ८ - श्लोक १६)
புநராவர்தினஹ ... (அத்யாயம் 8 - ஶ்லோகம் 16)
Punaraavartinah ... (Chapter 8 - Shloka 16)
Meaning : Everything is repetitive , cyclic ...
That is a great statement by Shri Krishna ... May be , this statement is also repeated many times in the Gita .
There are two approaches to experiences in the world , linear and cyclic ...
Linear approach attaches a beginning and end to everything . The experiences are one time . "if you lose this , it'll never ever come again' . Hence , there is excitement on an experience and disappointment , depression and grief at the loss of an experience . This approach is due to short sight , ignorance and lack of a comprehensive or an 'over-all view' . Western world suffers from this . The thinkers , scientists and philosophers there are gradually coming out of this shortfall .
The other approach is 'cyclic' . Here , everything is cyclic and repetitive . Hence , nothing is lost , if you lose this . It will come again . Time is cyclic . Life is cyclic . Experiences are cyclic . Peace , solitude , taking things in their stride , lack of revolutionary approach , absence of excitement , absence of anxiety in our country in particular and Eastern world in general , is the result of cyclic approach .
Shri Krishna says , 'Everything is cyclic' . If you look back at your life , you'll realize that incidents have repeated . Words are repeated . If someone travels with me to all places I visit for speech , he'll find me repeating . For one who is better learned , the repetition would be less frequent . Worms are born everyday . Ravana or HiranyaKashipu is born once in millions of years . Ordinary incidents may repeat frequently and dazzling ones less frequently . Everything will repeat nevertheless .
Our memory is short and our life span is short . Hence , we tend to forget . Time is cyclic and hence birth and death are repetitive . Death is not a full stop , but only a comma , to be continued .
This approach is criticized as the reason for lack of initiative among Hindus . May or may not be true . But , this a Fact and it is futile to fight with Fact .
