PHRASES IN THE GITA - 106
Api Ched Suduraachaaro Bhajate Maam AnanyaBhaak .. Saadhureva Sa Mantavyah SamyagVyavasitho Hi Sah .. (Chapter 9 - Shlokam 30)
Meaning : The worst criminal and sinner also will be known as a Sadhu , the moment he turns towards Me , starts worshipping Me with Ananya Bhava . That is because his resolve is firm .
This is a great assurance by Shri Krishna , This is one of the basic tenets of Hindu Dharma . The Abrahamic Religions prescribe "Permanent Hell" for sinners . (Definition of a sinner is silly too . A sinner according to these Religions is , 'not one who commits crime against His creation like fellow humans , other lives or Nature , but one who does not accept Jesus or Alla as Supreme and one who does not come to the Church or Mosque .) Hindu Dharma offers umpteen opportunities for the sinner to transform . The worst , dreaded criminal also has hopes of redemption .
Life should be centered on Shri Paramaatman . Sight must be on the Paramaatman . There are steps on the path towards Divinity . Forgetting Him and being plunged in the world is the lowest one . The first step is living in the world and remembering Him . Seeing the world through Him is the next big step . Seeing Him in the world is the next step . The ultimate step of Moksha is seeing Him , only Him , forgetting the world .
A worst sinner will be transformed in to a Sadhu , says Shri Krishna . In the next shlokam , He says , 'this transformation happens in a fraction of a second' . Is it possible ? Yes . If the resolve is firm . The ones who wish to get rid of habits like cigarette smoking or drinking alcohol decide to gradually reduce consumption and finally quit in a few days . That is due to lack of firmness in their resolve . Such attempt fails in most cases . One with firm resolve just shakes it off and is transformed in a second . Person desirous of becoming a Sannyaasi , plans and prepares for the life of a Sannyaasi . In all probabilities , he never becomes one . The firm willed one gets Vairagya in a second and leaves the house .
Shri Krishna does not say , "the worst sinner will be transformed not into a mere 'Good person' but a Sadhu on turning to Me" . A Sadhu is not just a good person but a personification of Divinity . An old mansion , not in use for almost a century , remains in 'eternal' darkness . Does it require long time and hard efforts to illuminate it ? No . Just a fraction of second and a single lamp are sufficient . The resolve to re-illuminate the mansion needs to be firm ! Shri Valmiki is a glorious example .
