PHRASES IN THE GITA - 112

Sarvametad Rtam manye yat vadasi ...  (Chapter 10 - Shlokam 14)

Meaning :  I regard all that You say as True ....

Arjuna is a common man .  Yes , extra-ordinarily skilled , but a very common human .  Hence , we find the common trait in most men around us in these words of Arjuna .

Most of us accept as true and believe in whatever is said by so-called big personalities , big by virtue of wealth or education or post and power or name and fame .  It is a very commonly seen trait .  When one finds his arguments weakening in a conversation , he would drag these big men into the conversation , say "Oh ! This is what Aristotle has said " , "These are not my words but words of Narendra Modi" and try to shut the mouth of the other participant in conversation .  Here , Shri Krishna is Arjuna's friend and cousin .  Moreover , now while listening to Vibhooti Yoga , the tenth chapter in the Gita , when he utters these words , Arjuna is almost convinced that Shri Krishna is Shri Paramaatman in human form .  (or Godly human or at least super human) .

What if he is 'Big' ?  What if he is the Prime Minister of the country ?  What if he is even the God ?  Should his words be accepted and believed as True , just because he says and he is 'Big' ?  In Tamil literature , there was a poet by name Nakkeeran , a poor Brahmin .  He said to Shiva , "What if you open your third eye and exhume me ?  You'll still be wrong .."  But , we are commonfolks and can not be Nakkeran .

Arjuna says , "I regard as true" , "I believe as true" .  He does not say , "What you say is true" .  That reveals a truth .  Words said by men , howsoever big and influential , words supported by hundreds of supportive evidences , may be believed as Truth , but will never become the Truth .  Belief is not absolute .  It comes hand in hand with misbelief .  And beliefs need 'attestation' and supportive evidences .  One may believe but it may not be Truth for him .  He continues to believe so long as a stronger evidence to suggest the contrary does not arrive .  When it is a personal experience , it becomes a Truth and it firmly roots itself deep in the heart .  Truth does not need attestation by 'big' men.  It requires mere 'Self - Experience".  It becomes Shraddha , analloyed with belief and disbelief .
