PHRASES IN THE GITA - 115
इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि ... (अध्याय १० - श्लोक २२)
இந்த்ரியாணாம் மனஶ்சாஸ்மி ... (அத்யாயம் 10 - ஶ்லோகம் 22)
Indriyaanaam Manaschaasmi ... (Chapter 10 - Shlokam 22)
Meaning : I am the Manas , among the Indriyas ... (am using the term Manas , as there is no exact equivalent in English .)
We have five Indriyas . The powers to see , listen , taste , smell and touch and feel . Organs for these powers are the eyes , ears , tongue , nose and the skin respectively .
These organs are intricate and marvellous . The functions these do are also significant and subtle . The results of the functions of these senses are pleasurable and joyous for us . The eyes for instance , bring to us all the magneficient colours and beautiful sights in the world . We may conclude that the eye is a great organ . But , detailed analysis will inform us that the eye is a mere opening . It is similar to 'Shutter' in the cameras of yester years . It merely allows passage of scene inwards from outer world . Recognition and analysis of the scene are done by the brain and the optic nerves . It is the Manas that enjoys the scene . The other sense organs are similar . The Manas sits majectically behind these sense organs and enjoys their functioning .
Does Manas exist ? Yes and No . There is no percievable organ called Manas but it registers its presence in subtler ways . Where does the Manas be ? It can be everywhere and nowhere . Does the Manas rule functioning of the Indriyas ? No . But Indriyas become disfunctional or dead if the Manas does not stand by the side of the Indriyas . It acts like catalyst . For instance , the eyes become ineffective if the Manas is absent and is involved with something else ...
Of the Indriyas , I am the am the Manas , says Shri Krishna .
