PHRASES IN THE GITA - 138

Swa Tejasaa Vishvam Idam Tapantam .. (Chapter 11 - Shlokam 19)

Meaning : This world is being fried in the heat of your Tejas ..

These words are spoken by a heart that does not want to accept 'destruction' as part of Nature ..  This world is being roasted in fire of your Tejas ..  Lives are caught and are struggling in the raging fire of Your anger ..  You are on a destructive Dance or Dance of Death ..  Whenever a man gets to see a great destruction , he utters these words ..  Whenever he realizes his own impotency in front of your destructive Power , he invariably utters these or some such words ..

Is there small and big , ordinary and frightening destruction ?  A leaf cutting off and falling off a tree is destruction ..  Death of a mosquito , a fish , a cock , a goat and any such life is destruction ..  Death of an old man is not different from death of a youngster ..But , a human mind grades destruction as petty , small , big , huge , colossal , ..  'Small and petty' destructions do not cause tremours in him ..  Loss of lives in greater numbers , death or destruction of something which he grades as more important , make him come face to face with destruction ..Because he is engrossed in pleasures and comforts of the worldly objects , because he is lost in the dreams of more and more pleasures , because he is in the grip of worldly lures .. his mind is in sort of an intoxicated state , in a state of absence of consciousness ..  It is in a weak state of refusal to see the glaring facts ..If he is to be shaken and brought to a conscious state , the intensity of destruction has to be enormous ..  This impact too is short termed and he returns to his state of 'intoxication' ..

A youngster joined the daily 'Times Of India' as reporter ..  He was given charge of the roads in the city ..  He came in the evening with a report of a road accident ..  The editor , without reading his report asked him , "How many died ?"  "None , by God's Grace" this good hearted youth replied .  "Is this a News ?" shouted the editor and threw the report in dustbin ..  "Oh !  So some one should die for me to earn my daily bread" .  This youth thought to himself and resigned from the job on the day he joined ..

I was in a sea side village of fishermen in the week after attack of Tsunami on eastern coast ..A person came with a lorry load of relief materials and a few lakhs of Rupees to be distributed among Tsunami affected people .. The village head described in detail the experiences on Tsunami day .."How many died in your village ?" asked this man from outside .  The village head said , "Very less by God's Grace .. Only 2 persons in our village died ..  All the others had gone to Chidambaram temple , as it was an auspicious full moon day" .  This man took me aside and asked , "If I knew a village where more people had died ..  I'll better distribute these materials in that village "  Anger rose in me ..  But , how could I get angry on a petty , pitiable person ?  That was his yardstick for measuring destruction ..

Creation , Growth and Life , and destruction are all parts of Nature ..  In fact , on closer observation , we'll be able to see that there are only Creation and destruction ..  Destruction starts the moment it is created ..  Afterwards , it is a journey towards destruction ..  This is either not perceptible to us or is ignored by us ..  We recognize destruction only when it exposes itself more gleringly ..  So , the time gap between moment of creation and the moment when destruction is perceptible to us is regarded by us as the period of growth and Life ..

Is it essential to know destruction ?  Will not the knowledge of destruction decrease interest in living ?  Truth is a Truth ..  It does not bother or get affected , whether you know it , or ignorant about it , whether you want to know it or otherwise ..  Being aware or unaware of the Truth , wanting to know or not wanting to know ..  depend on our inherent Swabhava ..  Yes .. If we know , we may be able to avoid petty , unworthy desires , petty expectations and petty efforts ..

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
