PHRASES IN THE GITA - 139

SuraSangaa Kechit Bheetaah Praanjalayo ... (Chapter 11 - Shlokam 21)

Meaning : Among the Gods , few are frightened and are bowing down to you ..

Arjuna is describing the ferocious Form of Paramatman ..  A human may get frightened on seeing that ..  A human may experience frightful shivers on being reminded of destruction and death ..  It is not surprising ..  How and why should Devas or Gods be frightened ?

Gods abode in Swarga ..  Swarga is abode of pleasures ..  not just pleasures , but superlative degree of pleasures ..  the best and the supreme in every kind of pleasures ..  Pleasures untainted by discomfort and pain ..  Gods enjoy these pleasures .. Nay .. they remain plunged in these pleasures ..

Pleasure comes ..  Fear comes along ..  Pleasure and Fear are twins , inseparable twins ..  Fear that the pleasure may dry up and vanish ..  Fear that pleasure may be snatched ..  Fear that the ability to enjoy pleasure may vanish ..  Fear that the authority , the qualification by which these pleasures are made available , may be cancelled and hence pleasures denied ..  Fear of competition ..  One need not enjoy pleasures ..  Mere deisre for pleasures will induce fear in the psyche ..

Arjuna says ..  "The Gods are joining palms and are worshipping the Paramaatman with fear" ..  They know and feel that Paramaatman is source of all Pleasures ..  Pleasures are available only on His Grace ..  Only the Paramaatman can bestow authority and eligibility to enjoy pleasures ..  Hence , Gods are seen worshipping Him with fear ..  In our worldly language , this could be understood by an example ..  "A Government employee , who is accustomed to extra money through bribery and all the comforts through the extra money , greets and stoops in front of his superiors , flatters them and runs errands for them "

The fact that they are Devas or Gods should not make us infer that they will stand firmly on the sides of Dharma ...  During the war between Shri Rama and Ravana .. they gather in the skies and merely greet "May victory be yours" without naming whom they want to win ..  Only on the eightieth day did they realize and see that Shri Rama was fighting from ground and did not even have a chariot ..  They descended and arranged a Chariot for Shri Rama ..  This happened only after they were very sure of victory of Shri Rama ..  By then , all the great warriors on Ravana's side had died ..

This same desire for pleasures incited the Gods to commit wrongs , get caught and be cursed ..

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
