PHRASES IN THE GITA - 144

लेलिह्यसे  ...  (अध्याय ११ - श्लोक २८)
லேலிஹ்யஸே  ... (அத்யாயம் 11 - ஶ்லோகம் 30)
Lelihyase  ...  (Chapter 11 - Shlokam 30)

Meaning :  You are licking all around ...

Licking is an unavoidable act while eating our food ..  Licking the fingers , licking the palms and licking the lips ..  It is an expression of joy of eating ..  It is an expression of relishing the taste of the food ..  "Lick your fingers" says an advertisement by Kentucky Chicken .. He means to say that it is so tasty that you'll lick your fingers ..  Recently , an advertisement for a chocolate was designed similarly ..  We Hindus , especially the Brahmins are conscious about mixing up of saliva ..  We do not eat from someone else's plate and have separate plate for each of us in our families ..  Yet , licking from our own plate is a delight ..

Animals lick their lips after a meal ..  That is more for cleaning up ..  "Oh ! the food is so tasty"  "this food is relishing" ..  animals do not have such feelings towards food ..  Hence , we can be sure that they lick their lips only for cleaning up those ..  But , humans are different ..  They can relish the taste of food ..  They can enjoy eating ..  Food is for energy and other nutrient requirements of the body .. Chewing is to help in digestion of the food ..  Licking is to experience the essential taste , to feel satisfied and to bless the one who fed us ..  Licking while eating is essential ..

We must lick and eat ..  But , this nonsense called etiquette or the falsehood in the name of etiquette prevents "me from being me" or "us from being us" ..  Unreal thoughts such as "others are observing" "others will think low of me"  "this does not suit my status" affect our actions , stop us from doing what is right , stop us from our traditional acts , stop us from joyful actions .. on the one hand and encourage actions that may not be proper , actions which may go against our tradition ..  (We do not lick and eat ..  We leave and waste food in our plates ..  We do not use our whole palm to eat ..  We do not mix well the food before taking it in ..  We do not use our lively hands to eat .  Instead , we use the lifeless spoon ..)

Here , Arjuna sees the Paramaatman licking in all directions after crushing with His Jaws all the warriors rushing into His wide open mouth .  He relishes His own action of destruction ..  He enjoys destruction ..  Joy in Creation ..  Joy in destruction ..

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
