PHRASES IN THE GITA - 147

TatKshaamaye Aham ..  Piteva Putrasya Sakheva Sakhyuh Priyah Priyaayah ... (Chapter 11 - Shlokam 42 , 44)

Meaning :   ...  Just as a father forgives son , just as a friend forgives his friend , just as a lover forgives his beloved , Hey Krishna , you should forgive me ...

Forgiveness ..   Both seeking forgiveness and bestowing forgiveness is a great act ..  Here , Arjuna is seeking to be forgiven ..  Arjuna and Shri Krishna are friends since childhood ..  They are also cousins ..  They have played together , roamed around together , chatted long hours , shared bed , shared food ...  Here , on the battlefield , Arjuna is in a position to command and Shri Krishna has to execute his commands as his charioteer ..  It is in this background , Arjuna seeks forgiveness from Shri Krishna ..  That reveals greatness in Arjuna's personality ..  He realized that Shri Krishna is manifested Divinity while listening to Gita discourse ..  "I did not realize Divinity in Shri Krishna and have played mischief with him , called Him names , taken liberties from Him" ..  Of course , these are before Arjuna could see His Divine Nature ..  Arjuna feels remorse for his own childish ignorance and hence seeks forgiveness..  It is easier and normal for an elder to forgive a youngster's lapses ..  That is what Arjuna seeks ..  Forgivr me as a father would forgive his son or a lover his beloved ..

A youngster seeking forgiveness of an elder or a personality greater than self , more educated , more qualified , a personality in a higher status .. is not surprising ..  Here Arjuna is seeking forgiveness from Shri Krishna , though He has been a long time friend , a cousin and a servant now on the battlefield ..  That is greatness , though it is after Arjuna saw and realized Divinity in Shri Krishna's personality ..  An elder seeking forgiveness of an youngster or a person with lower qualification , lower status is still greater and is possible only for a Mahatma ..

To bestow forgiveness is also similar ..   It is easier for an elder to forgive a youngster and easier still to forgive a loved one . But, it is difficult for a youngster to forgive an elder or a greater personality .

Ahankar or Ego is the obstacle for seeking forgiveness as well as bestowing forgiveness ..  To seek forgiveness or to heartily forgive is possible only for one who has eliminated Ego ..

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
