PHRASES IN THE GITA - 148

Samvruttah Sachetaah Prakrutim Gatah ...  (Chapter 11 - Shlokam 51)

Meaning :   ...  I have regained my Conscious Mind and my Natural state of mind ..

"I have regained my Conscious Mind ..  I have regained my normal state of Mind ..  I have returned to my Natural state of mind after seeing your gentle human form .." says Arjuna ..  Where had he been to ??  Where from has he returned ??

He had been to nowhere ..  He was very well in the battlefield ..  In an extra-ordinary situation , his mind was in a state not previously known to him ;  it was in state new to him ;  His mind returned to a state well known to him . its normal state . That is what he refers to as "returned to my normal state.."

Normal state is what we find in our normal routine days ..  We are well introsduced to this state of our mind ..  We regard it our own natural state  ..  The state exhibited by our mind at normal times is not the real state ..  It is not our real Nature ..  Our real state is revealed in an extra-ordinary situation ..

"I do not normally get angry ..  I am known to be a quiet , peaceful person ..  But , I be come an irrtable , angry person in testing times .."  The real nature reveals itself during harsh situations ..  "He is normally very helpful ..  I do not know why he refused ..  He has been running a bad patch in his life for the past few months .."  "My wife Akhila was timid ..  I presumed timidity is her nature ..  But , she bore all the pains , extreme in my view , during a severe illness she faced ..  She bore those peacefully , without a murmur , without irritation , without tears and without fear .. It was a pleasant surprise for me ..  On the other hand , a popular speaker on spiritual subjects , a Sannyaasi , one who had studied and elaborated on mind , its attributes , how to create equilibrium in mind and related topics .. broke down and wept when his doctor told him that his kidneys has failed and he will henceforth be put on dialysis ..

Normal mind set during normal routine times is different ..  The mind set during extra-ordinary times is different ..  Our real Nature hidden deep within explodes and reveals itself during extra-ordinary times ..  It makes others wonder , "Is he the same person ??"  It makes ourselves wonder , "Why did I behave this way ??"

Arjuna talks about one more aspect of mind  ..  Sachetas .. a conscious mind was regained , he says ..  When emotions like fear , grief , anxiety , worry , anger , excitement dominate in the mind , the mind loses its conscious state ..  The state of mind and the resutant behaviour change when conscious state of mind is lost ..  A conscious mind is an asset ..  To retain consciousness , deep Gyaana (knowledge) , firm conviction , unwavering inner self , truthfulness and self -introspection or what is termed "Swaadhyaya" are essential ..  To walk on a foot wide plate placed on ground is an easy task ..  But , to walk on the same one foot wide plate placed connecting two ten storeyed buildings requires greater wakefulness of the mind ..  an absolutely conscious mind ..

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
