PHRASES IN THE GITA - 153
सन्नियम्येन्द्रिय ग्रामम् ... (अध्याय १२ - श्लोक ४)
ஸந்நியம்யேந்த்ரிய க்ராமம் ... (அத்யாயம் 12 - ஶ்லோகம் 4)
Sanniyamyendriya Graamam ... (Chapter 12 - Shlokam 4)
Meaning : Well regulated set of all senses ...
He says .. Indriya Gramam .. or an Organic Group of Senses .. The senses are separate entities .. Each sense has unique function , unique form and unique way of working .. different from others .. But , every sense brings in Info about objects in the outer world .. Every sense brings in experience of interaction with the worldly objects .. In that sense , the senses are a Lively , organic group like a Gramam or village in Bharat ..
Good regulation of the senses ... That is laid as the primary condition for Nirguna Niraakaara Upaasanaa or the worship of the Formless Paramaatman devoid of attributes .. How is worship possible of a Formless , Boundless Paramaatman , with no attributes ?? We have a limited body . The senses with us have limited potential .. These can perceive regular worldly objects with forms and attributes .. The eyes , for instance can see objects which have form .. The eyes can see colours . (It is a fact that eyes do not see . Eyes are mere openings through which information on experience of interaction of eye with the objects are passed in . The Buddhi receives the info , sees and perceives the objects . But , in common parlance , eyes are presumed as seeing the objects ..) Similar are the other senses .. The Paramaatman is Boundless .. He or That prevails in the whole Creation .. He or That is behind every movement and every action in the whole Universe .. He or That is in everything and yet remains beyond .. He or That is beyond perception , beyond description , beyond thoughts .. Hence , He or That can not be perceived or known by our limited body , limited senses and limited Buddhi .. Hence the need for regulation of the senses .. In other words , the senses need to be restricted , put away from their normal functions .. In a way , these need to be made did-functional .. and that becomes primary condition in Upasana of the Formless Paramaatman .. Hence , Shri Krishna describes this mode of Worship as difficult , complex for humans ..
In devotion to a Form with attributes , there is no need to think of senses . There is no need to think of regulating the senses .. We convert the Paramaatman into One with Form and attributes .. He is transformed Boundless into Finite .. It becomes easier to relate with the Paramaatman in this state .. We may touch Him .. We may bathe Him and decorate Him .. We may talk with Him .. We may cry for Him .. We may sing for Him .. We may dance for Him .. We can feed Him .. We can sing lullaby and ask Him to go to sleep .. Regulating the senses no more remains a task .. It happens .. It happens as the result of devotion to the Form .. The senses develop disinterest for everything else .. Eyes are happy seeing His Form .. The ears do not want to hear anything else but His names and His Glory .. The tongue enjoys tasting His Prasada .. The legs want to reach His temple .. Hands want to decorate Him .. World with all its alluring objects are no more alluring for the senses immersed in His devotion .. The senses are regulated without any special effort .. That is hence , Shri Krishna says , "Devotion to Form with attributes is easier" .
