PHRASES IN THE GITA - 160
निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः ... (अध्याय १२ - श्लोक १३)
நிர்மமோ நிரஹங்காரஹ ... (அத்யாயம் 12 - ஶ்லோகம் 13)
Nirmamo Nirahankaarah ... (Chapter 12 - Shlokam 13)
Meaning : One without feelings of 'Me and Mine' ...
Absence of "Me and Mine" ... Is it possible in worldly life ? Is it a Utopian idea ?? A Jeeva (life) is born with a physical body .. Likewise , Ahankara too is a body , subtle body that comes with the Jeeva .. The feel of 'I am' is Ahankar .. This is always with us , every moment , even in deep sleep .. The Paramaatman has three basic attributes , Sat , Chit and Ananda .. Sat is Existence .. Ahamkara in Jeeva is equivalent to Sat in Paramaatman ..
The body is constituted of five basic elements .. and is manifestation of Prakruti or Maya .. The body is perishable and of existence for limited Time .. but it exists for sure .. It can not be denied .. Affection and binding with the body , vanity about the body and body - consciousness are to be gotten rid of .. Similarly , is Ahankaara .. It is part of subtle body but it exists nevertheless .. So Nirahankaara is not "absence of Ahankara" .. but absence of Ahankara Bhava is Nirahankara .. The 'Me' binds itself with mythical identities and regards itself as these false 'Me's .. "I am the body" ; "I am intelligent" ; "I am good hearted" ; etc . Absence of these mythical "Me"s is Nirahankara ..
That is primary level of Nirahankara .. The devotee is expected to get rid of the Aham Bhava itself .. the ahankara that is part of subtle body and that which comes with us lives .. Surrender is the way through which this can be achieved .. "I live for you" "I perform all my actions with a sense of 'not me but You , only You" .. and gradually the 'Me' vanishes .. That is the real intent of Shri Krishna when He says 'Nirahankara' ..He declares that such a Nirahankara Devotee is the most beloved Devotee of His ..
The Life comes into this world with physical body and subtle bodies like Manas and Buddhi .. And collects lots of objects like Wealth , assets , posts and positions , house , vehicles , wife , children etc . while living in this world .. This is inevitable .. One may have less of these but , worldly life is impossible without these .. Nirmama or absence of 'Mine' is not absence of these objects .. To hold on to these with possessive 'mine' feeling , to exercise right and authority over these is Mamattva and absence of these is Nirmama .. That is the essential intent of Shri Krishna , when He uses the word Nirmama .. He declares such a Nirmama Devotee as His most beloved Devotee ..
