Sama Du:kha Sukha ... (Chapter 12 - Shlokam 13)
Meaning : Equal in pain and pleasure ...
Equal in pain and pleasure .. The trait of a Devotee , dearest to the God .. Man usually regards the pleasures as earned through his own unique potentials and efforts .. He regards pain as punishment handed over to him by the God .. If he earns profit , he is proud of his own intelligence and hard work .. If he earns loss , he blames the judiciousness of God .. "It is after all the God whose writ runs", he laments .. "Oh ! my mother !" he cries out when he gets hit and wounded .. Does he remember his mother or anyone else when he gets sweets ?? "It is my good fortune .. I got sweets today" he praises himself and gulps the sweets instantly .. As long as he remains hale and hearty , he roams around in an almost intoxicated state .. He says , "I am enjoying my life" .. Once he gets a disease , he regards self as pious minded who does not deserve the disease .. He complains again to God . "How could you thrust this disease on me , who has never harmed , not even thought of harm to any life ?"
To remain equi-poised in both pain and pleasure , to remember God in both moments of pain and pleasure , to regard pain and pleasure as gifts of God .. these are traits of a devotee .. There is a wonderful story .. Shri Ram was once on the sea shore .. He removed all the arrows from His willow and struck those in the sands .. He removed the arrows one by one , cleaned and replaced in the wail .. One of the arrows had pierced a frog .. It was bleeding and was in last moments of its life .. Shri Ram was upset .. "You could have raised a sound when the tip touched your body" Shri Ram asked the frog .. "Why should I have shouted ? Hey Ram ! I have always taken your name since my birth .. You have blessed me with best of foods , ample in quantity .. I have enjoyed the food you gave .. Look at my well grown body .. If I have received and enjoyed the food you gave , why should I protest if you give me tip of the arrow ? The hands that gave food are giving the arrow tip too .. There is no reason to protest and shout ." the frog calmly replied .. Equal in pain and pleasure ..
Dayaram was a speaker on Religious subjects .. He transformed into a Sadhu .. That is an interesting incident .. He spoke on Religious and Dharmik subjects only to earn income to sustain his family .. The subject was Dharma and values in life .. He had not the real Knowledge and hence his words came not from heart but from lips .. Once , he had gone out for a week for discourses .. His three sons died of chickenpox .. When he saw the dead bodies of his all three sons on his return , he broke down and fell unconscious .. On regaining senses , he cried uncontrollably .. His condition was miserable .. His wife consoled him saying , "Oh dear ! He (Paramaatman) gave us the children .. He has taken back what he gave .. Why do grieve so much ?" Shri Dayaram's inner vision was ignited in an instant .. He gained 'Knowledge' .. and he instantly became a Sadhu .. In fact , this is what he had been speaking from Religious platforms .. But , the same words from his wife's mouth opened secrets of Inner cave within .. Equal in pain and pleasure ..
