PHRASES IN THE GITA - 199
अव्यभिचारेण भक्ति योगेन .. (अध्याय १४ - श्लोक २६)
அவ்யபிசாரேண பக்தி யோகேன .. (அத்யாயம் 14 - ஶ்லோகம் 26)
Avyabhichaarena BhakthiYogena .. (Chapter 14 - Shlokam 26)
Meaning : With firm devotion ..
Firm devotion , Unflinching Bhakti .. Shri Krishna uses a harsh word to describe such devotion .. He calls this type of Bhakti as Avyabhichaari Bhakti .. devotion unlike that of a prostitute ..
Why does a prostitute relate with a man ?? The money promised by him is a major factor for her .. Her mind is filled with thoughts about her own desires , dreams and needs which are to be fulfilled by the money he offers .. Her mind has no space for any thought or concern about him .. In fact , the thought at the bottom of her heart is , "someone else if not you"
Look at the way we relate with God , in the name of Bhakti or devotion .. We go to the temples .. Stand at the Sanctum Sanctorum .. Our minds are filled with our own needs , our own demands and our own worries .. There is no space in our minds for Him , or for His Attributes or His Grace .. We pray to Him .. We want Him to supply our necessities .. We want Him to fulfill our demands .. We want Him to eliminate our worries .. We beg .. We demand .. We even threaten .. We cherish at the bottom of our hearts a thought , "if not you , someone else" ..
Devotion has to be with Shraddhaa .. firm conviction .. Shraddha that He is .. Shraddha that He knows .. Shraddha that He will take care of my necessities , if He feels it is a necessity .. Has He not promised to look after Yog and Kshem of the devotee who remains immersed in thoughts on Him .. Does He not assure to exhaust all the sins and emancipate and liberate the devotee who relinquishes everything else and surrenders to Him ?? Shri Krishna calls such a Bhakti as Avyabhichaari Bhakti , a devotion unlike that of a prostitute ..
