PHRASES IN THE GITA - 205
वायुर्गन्धान इवाशयात .. (अध्याय १५ - श्लोक ८)
வாயுர் கந்தான் இவாஶயத் .. (அத்யாயம் 15 - ஶ்லோகம் 8)
Vaayur Gandhaan Ivaashayat .. (Chapter 15 - Shlokam 8)
MEANING : Just as wind carries fragrance ..
Basic elements in Nature are five .. Pancha Mahaa Bhoota .. Earth , Water , Air , Heat and Space ..
The Gyaanendriyas (organs foe knowing the world) with us are five .. The eyes , the ears , the nose , the tongue and the skin ..
To be more specific , these are mere instruments and are gross , which help us in acquiring knowledge of the world .. A Gyaanendriya is the functional potential of these instruments and is subtle .. Seeing , listening , smelling , tasting and touching are the five Gyaanendriyas ..
There are five objects which are feeds for these five Gyaanendriyas .. Sight (eyes) ; Sound (ears) ; Odour (nose) ; Tastes (tongue) ; and feeling of touch (skin) ..
One of the five elements is prominently associated with and is essential for each of the five functions (Gyaanendriya) .. Eye (Heat) ; Ears (Space) ; Nose (Air) ; Tongue (Water) ; and Skin (Earth) ..
The smell is carried by wind .. It is impossible for us to know a smell , if there is no flow of air or in other words if there is no wind .. The wind must touch the objects of smell , must flow towards us , it must touch the radars in our noses (smell buds) .. The smell brought to the buds in our nostrils is then converted to electro-magnetic waves and sent to Buddhi via nasal chord .. The Buddhi identifies the smell by referring to files of previous experiences stored in Chitta .. The whole process is completed in fraction of a second ..
"Like the wind carrying smell", says this phrase .. This analogy is used for Jeeva or Life .. (Aatman is speck of the Divine .. When the Aatman gets attached with subtle bodies , it is called Jeeva ..) The Jeeva is allured by worldly sensual objects through the senses and the mind .. It carries essence of experiences of interactions between senses and objects , when it leaves the physical body at the time of death .. This essence of sensual experiences is called 'Vasana' .. The Jeeva carries Vasanas while leaving the body and searches for a suitable body and continues in the new body with the vasanas of previous lives .. (Poorva Janma Vasanas) .. These Vasanas of previous lives explain differences in qualities , attitudes and skills in every person .. Extra ordinary special skills exhibited by some children (child prodigies) are expressions of these Vasanas carried from previous births ..
