आशा पाश शतैर्बद्धाः .. (अध्याय १६ - श्लोक १२)
ஆஶா பாஶ ஶதைர்பத்தாஹ .. (அத்யாயம் 16 - ஶ்லோகம் 12)
Aashaa Paash ShatairBaddhaah .. (Chapter 16 - Shloka 12)
Meaning : Bound by hundreds of ropes of hopes and expectations ..
Beliefs and hopes keep a man alive , they say .. Man will not be motivated to work in the absence of hope .. But , here Shri Krishna is calling the person bound by hundreds of hopes and beliefs an asura or a demon .. When animals get out of their dens in search of food , they do not carry something called hope .. When birds fly out of their nests at Sun rise in search of food , they do not carry any belief .. This is their routine .. They just do this .. They just get out or fly out .. and in the same direction and same path .. These return to their respective dens or nests with food .. If there was hope in these , thoughts and ideas like "let me go or fly in a different direction today" or "I hope to get a larger hunt today" or "let me get a tastier food today" etc .. This aspect does not prevail in animal world ..
A question arises .. "If there is no hope , if there is no belief , does it mean there is disbelief ?" How can anyone take up any work without hope and disbelief ?" There is a flaw in this thought .. If there is hope , there will definitely be 'no hope' too .. If you think of doing a work in a different way , it means that lack of hope in the previous way and hope in the new way join together .. In fact , the truth is that hope or belief has no basis .. Hope is a different form of desire .. All our desires will not be fulfilled .. So many factors have work in unison to fulfill a single desire .. It is not in our hands .. This realization causes springing up of 'no hope' or disbelief in our minds .. If there is no hope , there will neither be 'no hope' .. If there is no belief , there will no be disbelief too .. In such a state , there remains only the work .. Conviction about the work remains ..
Shri Krishna calls these men bound by hundreds of hopes asuras .. In fact , hopes trap us in to the mire of same mistakes again and again .. Hopes drag us into marsh of actions .. If hope vanishes and Shraddha spring up , actions happen , right action happens .. Competition , crazy run , jealousy , etc . vanish and peace and joy emerge ..
