PHRASES IN THE GITA - 230
Trividham Narakasya Dwaaram Kaamah Krodhah Tathaa Lobhah .. (Chapter 16 - Shloka 21)
Meaning : Desire , Anger and greed are three types of gates to Naraka / hell ..
We have not seen Naraka .. It is not known if we have experienced Naraka .. But , we know Naraka as 'den of difficulties , pains and sorrow' ..
Shri Krishna calls Kaama (desire) , Krodha (rage) and Lobha (greed or avarice) as three doors opening into Naraka .. By Naraka , he is probably not referring to a place but to the pain and grief caused by these three emotions .. Desire seems to be a pleasure .. When the desire is being fulfilled , it definitely is all the more pleasing .. But , the pleasure is momentous .. not a lasting one .. That is because fulfillment of Kaama , satiation of desire can not happen without participation by others .. To desire is personal .. An individual can desire - desire anything all alone , all by himself .. But , for the desire to be fulfilled he needs objects , persons , systems to work for him .. Satiation of desire can not be achieved all by himself .. Hence , there is always an uncertainty of the desire being satisfied .. and that is painful ..
Fulfillment of desire is never ever possible .. Efforts to fulfill incite more desire and does not calm desire .. It is like adding Ghee to fire .. Ghee can only kindle fire aggressively .. It can never put out fire .. This is also cause for anguish and pain ..
Desire is not a Spiritual realm .. It is materialistic and is worldly .. The worldly things are changeable and perishable .. Desiring is work of mind but its fulfillment is only through body and senses .. The body and senses lose their efficiency due to old age or over use .. Their capacity to experience pleasurable happenings also goes down .. This is a cause of grief in desiring ..
Hence , the effect of Kaama or desire is painful ..
Rage harms the one who nourishes it in his mind rather than the one on whom it is directed .. Anger , causes harsh reactions like hitting , injuring , and even killing .. There is a chance of anger getting calmed down after the reaction .. Rage on the other hand may never cause reaction , may never burst out in open .. It is cherished and nourished through repeated recollection .. It burns , boils , keeps on boiling within causing severe harm to the one who nourishes it .. He loses sleep .. He loses peace of mind .. His health and well being is disturbed .. His discretionary faculty or Buddhi is clogged .. He is lost and destroyed in every way .. Hence , rage too is painful and sorrowful ..
Greed inspires one to collect things liked .. The objects of pleasure are at arm's distance but are not used .. These are just preserved , never ever used or consumed .. Greed never allows consumption or usage .. That is probably worst pain .. Then there is fear of destruction , damage and theft .. The pain and anguish are aggravated ..
Shri Krishna calls this effect , result of desire , rage and greed as Naraka .. Naraka is the result of these three emotions .
