PHRASES IN THE GITA - 232
यो यच्छ्रद्धः स एव सः .. (अध्याय १७ - श्लोक २)
யோ யச்ச்ரத்தஹ ஸ ஏவ ஸஹ .. (அத்யாயம் 17 - ஶ்லோகம் 2)
Yo Yatchchraddhah Sa Eva Sah .. (Chapter 17 - Shlokam 2)
Meaning : Whatever the nature of his Shraddha (faith) , that is verily what he is ...
The extent to which is one’s Shraddha determines one’s personality .. One is verily one’s Shraddha , says Shri Krishna ..
As you think
, so you become .. is a saying in English language .. It suggests that we evolve according to our
thoughts .. This is a superficial
expression .. English language does not
know the word Shraddha and hence this superficiality .. Do all our thoughts turn real ??
Hindus are
many hundred steps ahead of European - Amerikans , in this regard too as in others .. Our elders suggested , “Shivo Bhootvaa Shivam
Yajet” .. One who worships Shiva with unflinching
Shraddha will transform into Shiva Himself ..
Here Shri Krishna suggests that a person is only the Shraddha he nourishes
.. The extent of his Shraddha is the
depth of his personality .. Shraddha is
not just thinking .. English language
does not have an equivalent word for the word Shraddha .. Conviction and faith come close to the real
meaning of Shraddha .. but not wholly ..
Not only English language , even other Bharateeya languages do not have
an exact equivalent word for Shraddha ..
All these languages use the Samskrit word Shraddha ..
Belief is different .. Shraddha is different .. Thinking , Imagining , dreaming , etc . are
all different .. Scientist and our ex –
President Dr Abdul Kalaam used to appeal to students to ‘dream’ .. OK ..
He may be right in some other context ..
But , he is wrong .. Dreams cannot
and will not come true .. All our
thoughts will not fructify .. All our beliefs will definitely not take shape .. “I should become this” ; “I’ll become this” ; “I’ll achieve this” ; “I should get this” ; “This will definitely happen to me” .. these
are all dreams , hopes , beliefs , imaginations or mere thoughts .. These are not Shraddha .. Shraddha is never generated for personal and
selfish aspects .. Shraddha is always
born only for universal and life values ..
“Truth will always triumph” is a Shraddha .. “Honesty never fails” is a Shraddha .. “Honest efforts will definitely fetch good
fruits” is a Shraddha .. Shraddha on
benevolence and good will is possible ..
“Goodness is valued” is a Shraddha ..
“Everything is cyclic and repetitive .. Good or bad , pain or pleasure , joy or
sorrow , will not continue for long .. All
these change in due course” is a Shraddha ..
“He , the God or Divine knows the Bhavana or essence of our emotions
hidden deeply in our hearts ..
Everything we get , friends , relations , wife , children , posts , boss
, workmen , opportunities etc . is according to our own Bhavanaa” .. This is a Shraddha ..
The extent to which is one’s Shraddha determines one’s personality .. One is verily one’s Shraddha , says Shri Krishna ..
