Vaan(g)mayam Tapa .. (Chapter 17 - Shlokam 15)
Meaning : This is Austerity of the speech ..
The discussion here is Tapas through speech .. Shri Krishna mentions here two aspects of Tapas by speech .. 1) Anudvega karam Vaakyam .. 2) Swaadhyaaya Abhyaasam ..
1) Anudvega Karam Vaakyam .. Talk without arousing passion , both in self and in listeners .. Talking without raising voice , talking without fury in the face , talk without exciting or tensing the vocal chord .. Shri Krishna adds three more conditions with this .. 'Satyam , Priyam and Hitham' .. Yes .. One must talk without arousing passion , but speak only the truth .. One must speak with love and affection .. One must speak for well-being .. talk with benevolence .. This is Tapas by speech .. Vedas also command us to use our faculty of speech in similar way .. "Satyam Brooyath .. Priyam Brooyaath .. Na Brooyath Satyam Apriyam ...." Speak the truth .. Speak with kindness .. Never speak the bitter truth ...
2) Swadhyayam .. Swadhyaayam is an exercise .. It is a daily exercise .. Reading books .. good books .. books which will elevate us .. books which will assist us in 'reading and knowing self ' .. It must be rigorously practiced daily .. This is Tapas of speech ..
