PHRASES IN THE GITA - 244

तपः मानसम्  ..  (अध्याय १७ - श्लोक १६)
தபஹ மானஸம்  ..  (அத்யாயம் 17 - ஶ்லோகம் 16)
Tapah Maanasam  ..  (Chapter 17 - Shlokam 16)

Meaning :  This is Austerity of the Mind ..

Tapas by Mind is being discussed by Shri Krishna and mentions five aspects as Tapas by Mind ...  "1)  Mana Prasaadah (Joy in mind) , 2) Soumyattvam (Beautiful mind) , 3)  Mounam (Calm , peaceful mind) , 4)  Aatma Vinigrahah (Restraint or control over mind) , 5)  Bhaava Samshuddhih (Purity or sanctity of mind) ...

1)  Manah Prasaadah ..  Prasaadam is Joy ..  Manah Prasadam is a Joyous Mind ..  The mind is in Joyous state when it is contented , when it is totally satisfied ..  A mind with complaints or a dissatisfied mind can never be happy ..  It is ever in sorrow ..  When is a mind dissatisfied ?  When it chases worldly objects in search of pleasure ..  Such a mind loses its tranquility , remains agitated  and always in grief ..  A contented mind is peaceful and naturally joyful ..  Manah Prasaadah is thus contentment in mind and is a Tapas of mind ..

2)  Soumyattvam ...  means Buauty ..  The noble and benevolent emotions in mind make a mind beautiful ..  Violence , Rudeness , perversion , restlessness , absence of forbearance , hate , jealousy etc. are a few emotions which distort beauty of a mind ..  Mind without such emotions is beautiful .  On the other hand Non-violence , tenderness , compassion , simple , transparency , peace , forbearance etc . are some of the emotions which add to the beauty of mind ..  These constitute Soumyattvam , which is Tapas by mind ..

3)  Mounam ..  Tranquil mind , mind without waves , an undisturbed mind ..  Mind that is not disturbed by duels like favourable - unfavourable , union - separation , like - dislike , bouquet - brickbat , pleasure - pain etc . is a tranquil mind in state of Mounam ..  A mind filled with Noble thoughts remains in Mounam ..  Mounam is Tapas of mind ..

4)  Aatma Vinigrahah ..  The mind not allowed to wander as per its own wish , the mind that is not allowed to loaf chasing pleasure through sense objects , the mind that can be commanded to remain focussed on the subject we decide , is a mind in perfect restrain ..  This Aatma Vinigrahah .. and is Tapas of Mind ..

5)  Bhaava Samshuddhi ..  It is purity in mind , sanctity in mind ..  Thoughts make a mind ..  Pure thoughts make a pure mind ..  Absence of selfishness and boastful nature purify Mind ..

These all are Tapas by Mind ..

Chapter X (19 - 42)

Shri Bhagawan said:   I shall speak to Thee now, Oh best of the Kurus! of My Divine attributes, according to their prominence;   there is no end to the particulars of My manifestation. (X - 19) Arjuna asks for a detailed and complete elaboration on His manifestations.   Shri Krishna replies He will be brief in description.   Why?   ‘My manifestations are infinite’, says Shri Krishna.   Shri Krishna is in human form.   The Infinite Paramaatman has bound Himself in a finite Form.   A finite can not fully describe an Infinite.   The same Shri Krishna in the next chapter says, “See My Infinite Forms.   See as much as you wish”, when Arjuna expresses his desire to see His one Form.   Brief in words and Elaborate in Form.;. The discussion in the last shlokam continues here.   The listener’s ahankara tries to fathom the speaker.   The listener, Arj

Chapter IV (1 - 20)

\   ADHYAAY IV   GYANA KARMA SANYASA YOGAM Introduction This chapter named ‘Gnyana Karma Sanyasa Yog’ is a special one, as this is where Shri Krishna reveals the secrets of Avatara to Arjuna. We, as human have a natural weakness.  When a great thought is placed before us, instead of analysing the thought, understanding it and trying to put it into practise, almost all of us start worshipping the person who revealed the thought.  Worship of the Cross and the idols of Buddha can be quoted as examples.  One of the reasons for this may be that we deem him to be the originator of the thought.  Truths are eternal and can only be revealed and not invented.  You ask any educated person about ahimsa or non-violence.  You should not be surprised if he instantly come up with the answer, “Gandhi”.  You try to clarify that ‘almost two thousand years ago Shri Mahaveer based his life and religion solely on the principle of Ahimsa’ and ‘hundreds of years prior to that the Vedas, the Gi
