PHRASES IN THE GITA - 275
यया स्वप्नं भयं शोकं विषादं मदं न विमुञ्चति दुर्मेधा धृतिः सा तामसी .. (अध्याय १८ - श्लोक ३५)
யயா ஸ்வப்னம் பயம் ஶோகம் விஷாதம் மதம் ந விமுஞ்சதி துர்மேதா த்ருதி ஸா தாமஸி .. (அத்யாயம் 18 - ஶ்லோகம் 35)
Yayaa Swapnam Bhayam Shokam Vishaadam Madam na vimunchati Durmedhaa Dhrutih saa Taamasi .. (Chapter 18 - Shlokam 35)
Meaning : The unintelligent resolve is Taamasi , in which one does not give up dreaming , fearing , grieving , despair and conceit ..
"Laziness , sleep , procrastination , etc . are deep rooted in a person in pre-dominantly ignorance mode (Tamasi) .. He knows it and also is aware of hurdles in self - progress caused by these 'possessions' .. Yet , he is unable to shirk these off .. The 'obstinate determination in him which holds on to these is called here Tamasi Dhruti (the determination of the Ignorant) by Shri Krishna .. Can this be called 'determination' ? Shri Krishna affirms but calls this Tamasi ..
Similarly , fear , grief , delusion and arrogance are also a few deep rooted traits in Tamasi , which he is aware of and which he realizes to be obstacles in his path towards self - improvement .. Yet , the Tamasi does not launch determined fight against these .. He accepts these as unchangeable natural traits , mixed well in his DNA .. These are so strongly merged in his personality that we do not know whether he holds on to these or these grip and tie him down .. This firm grip is called as Tamasi Dhruti ..
