Chanchalam Hi Manah Krishna Pramaathi Balavad Drudham ... (Chapter 6 - Shloka 34)
MEANING : The Manas is obstinate and unsteady , Krishna !
The other attribute of Mind is its stubborn-ness . It wants to have again and again anything that is denied to it . A habit ingrained in the mind is very hard to erase .
Many diseases , labelled 'psycho-somatic diseases are caused not through infection by germs , bacteria and viruses , but by this unsteady mind . Hence , mind needs to be steadied and calmed . It should not be allowed to hop around on its own and should be under our control . New age medicine has started to acknowledge this fact . Which is the toughest and most challenging task in this world ? Reigning in an unsteady mind is the toughest task . Today , we find Yog classes , meditation classes in every street . Yog is one of the most lucrative businesses in the world , Many neo-yogis (also called Corporate Yogis) have sprung up , who capture huge lands in forests , hill tops or sea shore , build cottages with all comforts , charge in thousands or lakhs for a few days stay and offer classes to quieten the mind . Money changes hands from the participants to the coffers of these Yogis but no visible impact is seen on their minds . It continues to remain unsteady .
This is not problem only for Arjuna but for almost all of us . The mind is unsteady . Mind is rigid and obstinate . If it is thinking , it won't stick to one subject . It will not continue with the work on hand for long . While listening to a lecture or while viewing a drama or while chatting with friends , the mind refuses to be involved for long , repeatedly hops away to other fields . We also see many who shake foot or thigh , vigorously bite their nails , scratch without being prompted by an irritation , play with hair or moustache or indulge in some silly actions . These and such other actions are manifestations of an unsteady mind . They say that " a dog has no work to do but has no time to spare" . This aptly fits for our minds .
An infirm and unsteady mind does not allow us to take decisions . We come across many who struggle to select one path among the four or five diversions , one cloth from heaps pile up in a cloth store , one eatable from a long menu card in a hotel , one design from the hundreds of designed tiles in a hardware store , why , even the one seat in an almost empty bus . They are victims of unsteady mind . The more number of choices offered , the higher is the unsteadiness of mind . It quietly accepts anything if there is no alternative .
The other attribute of Mind is its stubborn-ness . It wants to have again and again anything that is denied to it . A habit ingrained in the mind is very hard to erase .
